English Poem

Tree

About this poem
A poem that treats trees as ancestors — a dream after a hunt in which falling blossoms carry the names of the dead, and the poet wakes to find his own history, and his own blood, running through roots and veins alike.
About English
English, a West Germanic language, functions in India as a widely used link language across regions and as a major language of literature, education, and public life. Within the collective, it serves both as an original language of composition for some poets and as the primary language of translation connecting readers across India's many languages.

Grandmother said
trees are my ancestors.

If trees are my ancestors
then all elements on the earth
are proofs of my history.

I went hunting once
and took a nap
on the swollen root overground
where I had a dream,

A fog descended from sky
a dust of seeds
that bloomed white flowers
in their fall,
oozing the spirit of life
chanting our ancestors' names.

I woke up
from a timeless nap,
felt the muscles
swollen over my skin.

I touched them—
there was a stream inside.
I heard
the rustling of leaves,
crackling of branches,
gusts of whistling winds.

I felt
My history is within me
I should read my history
flowing in my veins.

The image of blossoms chanting ancestors' names will stay with me for a long time.
